Liquidity is quoted as a number and experienced as an outcome, and the two frequently disagree. Understanding the gap tells you how much to trust a depth figure. The version of this that operates in production is [a crypto OTC trading platform](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/crypto-otc), and their documentation fills most of the gaps below.

## Displayed depth

What the order book shows: resting orders at each price level.

This overstates available liquidity for two reasons. Much of it is placed by market makers who cancel when conditions change, which is precisely when you want to trade. And some of it is layered across venues by the same participant, so the same capital appears multiple times.

Treat displayed depth as an upper bound rather than a measurement.

## Real depth

What actually fills when an order arrives. Reliably less than displayed, and the gap widens with volatility.

The way to measure it is empirically. Execute a known size, record the average fill price against the mid at submission, and calculate the effective cost. Do this at several sizes and you have a depth curve for that venue and asset.

This is worth doing once for the venues and assets you trade regularly. It takes an afternoon and it replaces guesswork with a number.

## The depth available to you

What a liquidity provider will actually show you, which depends on your relationship, your size and your history.

A provider quotes a known counterparty with clean settlement differently from an unknown one. This is not favouritism, it is credit and operational risk pricing. Above a certain balance the same logic points at [Collect & Exchange](https://collectnexchange.cy/) instead.

The implication is that depth is not a property of the market alone. It is a property of the market and your position in it.

## How a liquidity provider sources

A provider quoting you a firm price for size is sourcing that liquidity somewhere: its own inventory, other clients with opposing flow, exchange books, or other providers.

The best price usually comes from a provider that can internalise, matching your trade against an opposing client. No market impact, so the spread can be tighter.

This is why providers with diverse client flow quote better than those without, and it is a reasonable question to ask: what proportion of your flow is internalised.

## Questions that reveal actual capability

What size will you quote without hesitation in this asset. A specific number indicates they know their book. Vagueness indicates they will find out when you ask.

What is your typical spread against mid for that size. Again, a number.

Do you internalise, and roughly what proportion. Tells you where the liquidity comes from.

What happens in a volatile period. Every provider widens. The useful answer describes by how much and whether they continue quoting at all.

Can you show a depth curve or historical fill quality. Sophisticated providers have this.

## What to do with the answers

Match provider to trade. A provider strong in one asset is not necessarily strong in another. For anything meaningful, have two relationships so that a provider widening or declining does not leave you without execution.

And measure. Record the implied spread against mid on every trade, by provider and size. After twenty trades you know which provider is actually better for which kind of trade, which is information no marketing material will give you.

Providers operating as [a regulated crypto liquidity provider](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/crypto-otc) will generally answer the capability questions directly, because those answers are the product.

## The summary

Displayed depth is marketing. Real depth is measurable. The depth available to you is negotiable and improves with relationship. Plan around the third one.
